The Festival of Hola Mahalla

Hola Mohalla is a event is Sikhism which starts on the first day of lunar month of Chet in Nanakshahi Calender which falls in month of March always. Hola Mohalla was first started by Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Anandpur Sahib. Guru Ji started this festival as a day for Sikhs to practise their military exercises and hold mock battles. Now on day of this event, Sikhs celebrate Hola by playing and watching SIkh martial art Gatkha and join Nagar Kirtan and Parades.

With shining swords, long spears, conical turbans and twirled-up moustaches, Nihangs gallop past on frothing horses, raising clouds of dust, as they celebrate Hola Mohalla. Most of the Nihang Singhs join this event, who are descendents of Guru Gobind Singh Ji's army. They carry traditional weapons, fire-arms and they are also familar with horse-riding and also perform different activities with Shastars and horses. On day of Hola Mohalla, you can see old traditional weapons, guns, horses, archeries and many other weapons. In 2012, hola mohalla festival will be on 9th March, 2012.
