The First Guru: Guru Nank Dev Ji

















Guru Nank Dev
was founder of Sikh religion and first Guru of Sikhs born on 15th April, 1469 at Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi in the present distrect of Shekhupura now in Pakistan. This place is now known as Nankana Sahib. Guru Nanak Dev ji's father, Mehta Kalyan Das, more popularly known as Mehta Kalu, who was chief accountant of Rai Bular. Mata Tripta ji was mother and Bibi Nanki was slder sister of Guru Ji who become first Sikh of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Early Life: At age 13 it was time for Guru Nanak to be invested with the sacred thread according to the traditional Hindu custom. The ceremony was attended by all family and friends and they all get dissapointed when Guru Nanak refused to accept the sacred cotton thread from the priest. Nanak was an extra-ordinary and different child in many ways.God provided him spiritual mind and ratinal thinking. In his childhood, Guru Nanak Ji learnt Sanskrit and Hindi languages. He impressed his techers with his extra-ordinary knowledge about divine things. He was married to Mata Sulakhni ji, who gave birth to two sons: Sri Chand and Lakhmi Das. Guru Ji's sister took him to Sultanpur for job in Modikhana of the local Nawab, Daulat Khan Lodhi.

Four Udasis: At the age of 38, in August 1507, Guru Nanak Sahib heard God 's call to dedicate himself to the service of humanity after bathing in "Vain Nadi" (a small river) Near Sultanpur Lodhi. He now undertook long travels to preach his unique and divine doctrine (Sikhism). After visiting different places in Punjab, he decided to proceed on four long tours covering different religious places in India and abroad. These tours are called Char Udasis of Guru Nanak Sahib. During these journeys, Guru Sahib visited various religous palces for preaching Sikhsim. He went to Kurukshetra, Haridwar, Joshi Math, Varanasi, Gaya, Patna and many other places. The real aim of the tour was awakening the people to realise the truth about God and to introduce Sikhism.

The Festival of Hola Mahalla








Hola Mohalla is a event is Sikhism which starts on the first day of lunar month of Chet in Nanakshahi Calender which falls in month of March always. Hola Mohalla was first started by Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Anandpur Sahib. Guru Ji started this festival as a day for Sikhs to practise their military exercises and hold mock battles. Now on day of this event, Sikhs celebrate Hola by playing and watching SIkh martial art Gatkha and join Nagar Kirtan and Parades.

With shining swords, long spears, conical turbans and twirled-up moustaches, Nihangs gallop past on frothing horses, raising clouds of dust, as they celebrate Hola Mohalla. Most of the Nihang Singhs join this event, who are descendents of Guru Gobind Singh Ji's army. They carry traditional weapons, fire-arms and they are also familar with horse-riding and also perform different activities with Shastars and horses. On day of Hola Mohalla, you can see old traditional weapons, guns, horses, archeries and many other weapons. In 2012, hola mohalla festival will be on 9th March, 2012.
